It's like a slap in the face or a wake-up call.... you hop out of bed one day and find you're a bug instead of a clerk, your whole family wondering why you're not going to work....

Before it happened, I saw it as a report card.  I figured that since the price of, say, our "widgets" had been steadily going up the first half of 2004, and increasing much faster than the price of milk or bread or housing or even medicine... well, we can detect and decipher a clue from you, you big-time "widget"-makers.  It was obvious:  the leader of the refiners of "widget juice" could tell his days were numbered, so he was making a quick buck on his way out.  I figured we'd elect a new "widget" leader by November 2nd.  It really seemed like a done deal.

But then the unthinkable happened.

We had recently won a big tussle over what amounted to be a giant puddle of pre-"widgets," and yet the price of "widgets" here at home was going through the roof.  I always thought that if you win one of these tussles, well, then the price of "widgets" goes down, right?

Boy, was I wrong.

Or maybe not.  I mean it is possible that a majority checked off on his "report card" that we thought he was failing... but why pursue that route:  why act like a bunch of stuff happens because of some well-connected whisperers whispering, when it can all be done out in the open.

It's probably better to just re-evaluate.  Sit back and ponder where I went wrong.

But how could I have been so wrong?

Here's my point:  We've been told that in certain situations it's ok for soldiers to kill women and children; it's sad, nobody likes doing it, but for the price of "widgets" to go down, sometimes sacrifices just have to be made.

But then, what if the price of "widgets" doesn't go down?  Then we give the head "widget"-maker a bad report card, right?  On November 2nd, right?

No.  I'm wrong.  Apparently we don't.

I guess we simply have to embrace this development.

Not definitive proof of anything, but evidence that points the same direction I point in the above can be found here.
